On Friday, June 26, 2015, Eagle Point Solar filed a formal complaint with the Iowa Utilities Board, claiming Alliant Energy has hampered solar installation in the city of Asbury, despite an Iowa Supreme Court ruling last summer upholding a key funding mechanism that allows cities and other non-taxable entities to reap renewable energy tax benefits.
Eagle Point Solar President and owner Barry Shear claims the utility is prohibiting customers from “net metering” (a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity they add to the grid) making solar projects like the one in Asbury less viable.
He feels the utility is attempting — in spite of public relations campaigns to the contrary — to stifle development of alternative energy because it has the potential to significantly affect utility profits.
