City of Cedar Rapids Awards EAGLE POINT SOLAR® With Contract For Transit Bus Garage.
The City of Cedar Rapids City Council has approved an agreement with EAGLE POINT SOLAR® to purchase solar generated electricity. The City will host a 90kW panel array on the Cedar Rapids Transit Bus Garage, located at 427 8th Street NW.
The city began exploring the possibility of solar with an interest in developing more sustainable practices and possible cost savings.
“It is important for us to continuously look for opportunities to incorporate sustainable practices as well as create more value for our residents,” said City Manager Jeff Pomeranz. “This project is an example of how we can accomplish both.”
A request for proposals was issued on July 16, 2015, with proposals due August 27, 2015. The City received eight proposals, which were evaluated based on the cost benefit to the City, experience of the company, materials used, warranty offered, certifications, service cost, connection cost, and buyout option. Based on their responses to these criteria, the evaluation panel selected EAGLE POINT SOLAR®.
“EAGLE POINT SOLAR® is excited to bring our mission and purpose to the city of Cedar Rapids for this great project. The use of solar energy offers huge potential for natural resource and climate protection, and for the expansion of renewable energies on the road to a future-oriented energy supply,” said EAGLE POINT SOLAR® President Barry Shear.
The Bus Garage facility has a single plane roof system, which faces south, making it ideal for the solar panels. The facility is 30,216 square feet and currently uses ~200,342 kWh each year. Installation is planned to begin immediately to gain the maximum benefit of use during the summer peak solar production months.
