On Wednesday, August 23rd Jim Pullen, Eagle Point Solar General Manager and Warren McKenna, Farmer’s Electric Cooperative CEO hosted a presentation and tour of the 1.8MW solar array located at the CO-OP near Kalona, Iowa. The event was attended by a select group from the Moroccan government as they were visiting Iowa as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program. Although the contingent is in the United States for 3 weeks, this is their only opportunity to see a solar project.
The nearly 2-hour discussion ranged from why certain solar equipment was used to a variety of financing vehicles for such projects. The group was also able to get an up close-up view of the array and get an explanation as to how Farmer’s Electric CO-OP sees value in such a project.
Morocco’s clean energy agenda, combined with its commitment to sustainable development, have helped foster a dynamic energy ecosystem. However, Morocco’s efforts could benefit from exposure to the U.S. experience with large scale renewable energy projects, cutting edge research and development and innovation efforts, and understanding of how well-crafted economic and regulatory incentives can encourage the adoption of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies.
The Department of State has outlined the following specific objectives for the project:
Review U.S. national energy and climate policy challenges and international cooperative efforts to develop secure and transparent global energy markets and climate frameworks;
Discuss U.S. strategies to develop and secure diverse energy supplies, reduce consumption of fossil fuels, increase investment in research and technology, and strengthen international cooperation in key energy sectors; and
Showcase state and local energy initiatives that use alternative energy technologies to promote energy independence and responses to the impacts of climate events.
Thanks to everyone that attended and helped organize this event!
